What type of domain should you use?
There are many new TLDs (top level domains) available. Traditional ones that have existed for over 20 years, like .com .net and .org are no longer the only ones available to you. You can now register:
- … and many others
So what type of domain should you use?
Ask yourself this… when was the last time you typed in a domain name into your browser to find a company or service you were looking for? Me, well I would say the only ones I regularly type in are google.com and youtube.com – and occasionally facebook.com.
The reason for this is we’re all so used to just “googling” for whatever we’re looking for, and finding it pretty much straight away. So the need to remember domain names is less important these days.
Google and other search engines (Yahoo and Bing and others) will rank websites based on the content they contain. So when people are searching for information they will be given the best results the search engines can find that will provide that information. Chances are, the information anyone is searching for will be found on multiple sites – so the necessity to narrow it down to one domain name is unnecessary.
The new TLDs will undoubtedly make money for the domain registrars but will they help you get found on the internet? Probably not…
So my recommendation is to register the .com .net and .org – and create good quality content. If it really matters to you, or helps to build your brand eg. PaulSmith.Photography – then go for it. Otherwise concentrate on content – that’ll get you far more visitors than a fancy new expensive domain.
